Chapter 6

Which character is better able to help the boys survive on the island?  Why?

  1. I think that Ralph is the best boy to help get off the island. Out of any of the boys he has the best combination of discipline and leadership. Although Jack is a good leader he gets side-tracked with less important things like hunting and does not understand the importance of the fire. Piggy and Simon both have good ideas but do not have the confidence or leadership skills that Ralph has. Ralph knows what is best which is shown by his knowledge to keep the fire going and also to build shelters. He also is not distracted by hunting and building a fort. Ralph is the only boy who has the traits needed to get the boys of the island

  2. SECOND COMMENT WOO!
I think that Ralph and Jack would both together would help the boys get off the island. After they set aside their differences they would make a really good team. Jack is helping them in the woods, but Ralph is telling them what to do. They are both good leaders. If they worked together everyone would make out fine, but they are not. Ralph is helping them find food. Jack is keeping them in line he is telling how to stay alive, but most of the people are not listening. If they would listen too both of the boys they would survive easily. They are both trying.

  3. Based on survival, Jack is better equipped to survive. By survive I mean that he can hunt..for meat.....

Of course, those who care a bit about order, civilization and the bigger picture of being rescued...would find Ralph the better at surviving.

Piggy is actually the one who represents intelligence and sanity but since physically he doesn't contribute much....well he obviously won't survive.

Simon is more of a daydreamer or the person who sees through the misconceptions but in terms of actual "survival" he isn't the most practical of choices.

So overall, Jack is probably the best prepared to "survive" on the island. Though I quote the word "survive" because it simply means that Jack would be the one most likely to live on the island.....(until he runs out of pigs to slaughter that is.)

  4. Ralph is better able to help the boys survive on the island. He uses reason to persuade the children to work on the island. For example, he is constantly telling the boys to maintain the signal fire in order for the boys to be rescued. He tries his best for the people on the island.
Jack is a more likable leader, but he is not focused on getting rescued. Actually, he does not to be concerned about getting rescued at all. He is too much into hunting, trying to be wild, and having fun.
Simon would not result in the boys getting rescued because he is not confident enough to lead the boys. He would not be able to persuade the boys to get work done, like Ralph does. Piggy would be a good candidate for helping the boys survive on the island, but he is not liked. The boys do not want to be run by a chubby, intellectual stereotype.

  5. I believe that Ralph is the most capable boy on the island to be able to keep the boys alive. He will make sure that everything and everybody stays in tact so that the island does not become chaotic. Ralph makes sure that the boy's first priority is to get rescued and keep the signal fire burning, while all Jack wants to do is go hunting and kill pigs when they have plenty of fruit on the island at the moment. Ralph knows that the main concern should be having shelter and getting rescued, and not going out and killing pigs. Also, unlike Jack, Ralph would not have complete power over every boy on the island, yet he would still be a strict leader and would make sure that everyone followed the rules of the island.

Although Jack is needed to hunt, Ralph would still be the best leader becasue he knows what they need to do. Jack is just going to do what he wants to do. Ralph is the only one who doesn't get distracted and fascinated by the pleasures of the island and that is why he would be able to keep the boys alive.

  6. I believe that the character that is the best at helping the boys survive on the island is Ralph. Ralph does everything he can to try to keep everyone alive and well. Ralph is always making sure that there is enough fruit and water. That is why, in chapter five, when the “littluns” were going to the bathroom near the fruit, he told them to stop, since he knew that this may result in making the fruit bad, and leaving the boys with an insufficient food source. Also, when all the boys wanted to stay on the “castle,” Ralph pointed out the fact that there was no food, shelter, and barely any water, so they did not have enough to survive there.
Jack does not have the same survival skills as Ralph. In the beginning of the book, Jack was so obsessed with hunting that he did not help anyone else to survive, and it was up to Ralph to get the “littluns” food and water. Also, Jack did not even think about whether or not the “castle” had the things needed to survive, he just wanted to stay there because he liked pushing rocks.
The boys are lucky that they have Ralph to help them survive, because he is a great leader, plus, they do not have to rely on Jack for everything.

  7. I think Ralph would be the best person to help everyone survive on the island. I think Ralph is the best person because he knows what it takes to become a leader. Ralph is trying to tell people to keep the fire going. Ralph can tell people what to do and knows how to direct people.
I also think Jack could make a good leader. Jack knows how to hunt and find food. Jack is more determined on surviving and staying on the island while Ralph is more determined on getting off the island as soon as possible. Jack tries to tell people what to do to much instead of listening to other people. I think they would both make good leaders if they worked together better.

  8. I believe that Ralph is better able to help the boys survive on the island because he is more grown-up like and mature. He has common sense and is well organized with meetings. He also is a great leader because he asks everyone for opinions and feedback instead of being a dictator like Jack is. Ralph is also able to help feed everyone by picking fruit on the island. Jack would be a good survival person too though because he has good hunting skills. But, Jack is more of a boy that just wants to have fun. In this case, survival can’t be all fun and games. In order to survive you’ll need to be organized and have food.

  9. If you went by who was the smartest and who would most likely know what to do, it would be Piggy. Unfortunately, the others would not share this view, and no matter how smart a person is, they can't lead if no one will follow. So by this, I would have to go with Ralph, since he is the best leader of the group, while staying smart, and no being too controlling (like Jack).

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think that both of the leading boys, Ralph and Jack can do that. But both of the boys need to put aside their differences and just start to work together as a team to be able to survive on the island. I mean Jacks the hunter and knows about the woods and that type of stuff; but Ralph can make good points with his speech's that he gave out like the one in chapter 5.Ralph has the potential of controlling these boys; but Jack on the other hand can help all the boys with food and hunting things like on those bases.

Both of these boys need to work together and just make every boy on the island with them survive; and to not argue anymore finding things just to survive.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think Jack is the character that best allows the boys to survive on the island. Ralph's main role is to keep order, which he does not do a very good job of. Even if it did it wouldn't necessarily help the boys' survival that much. He also obsesses about the fire. This however does not help with their survival but rather the chance that they are rescued. Jack on the other hand, hunts. He killed a pig which is food. Food is necessary to live, so I think it is fairly obvious that Jack is the boy that best helps the other boys survive.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think Ralph is the best suited to keep everyone alive on the island and also get them off of it. He has a good combination of discipline and leadership. He constantly tries to convince the boys that the signal fire needs to be maintained or they won't be saved. He also uses good reasoning to get the kids to work and do what is in their best interest. He is capable of keeping everyone stable. Ralph doesn't get distracted by irrelevant things. Overall he has the knowledge to keep them alive because he was the one who knew that the fire is one of the most important things.

Simon would not be able to get the boys rescued because he is not confident enough to lead. He would not be able to get the boys to do the work needed done, like Ralph does. Piggy probably could lead almost as well as Ralph but he is not liked by anyone. The boys do not take him seriously no matter what he says even if it is important.

Although Jack could be a good leader he gets side-tracked with hunting and does not understand how important keeping the fire going is. Ralph makes sure that getting rescued is the top priority, while Jack's is to hunt and kill pigs when right now the fruit is enough.

So Ralph is the best person to keep everyone alive.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think that Ralph is the best choice for keeping the other boys on the island alive. He makes sure that everybody and everything on the island stays in order. Ralph makes sure that everyone stays on task because he wants to make sure that they get rescued and to also keep the signal fire going. Jack is completely irrelavant to the smartest way for the boys to get rescued because all he wants to do is hunt and kill pigs.

I also believe that Ralph would be the best leader because he knows what they need to do in order to survive until they get rescued. All Jack is going to do is what he wants and not what is best for the others. Ralph is the only one on the island out of all the boys that knows what to do or doesn't get distracted by all the things on the island that they see or want to do. This is why I think that Ralph would be the best choice in order to keep to others alive.

  14. I think that Jack is better able to help the boys survive on the island. But I also think that Piggy and Ralph would be better able to help all the boys survive on the island if the three of them would get along.

Ralph just acts as a leader figure. He does not get much done. Jack is the one who orders the boys to do things around the island such as hunting. Ralph is a good leader, but often loses sight of what is important. He starts to obsess over the fire, even though all the boys need food. He gets distracted with the simple things. Ralph also lets Jack order him around, and Jack does what he wants. What Jack does is more beneficial to the boys on the island. Piggy has the right ideas, but no one will listen to him. I think that once all the boys learn to work together, survival on the island will be much easier.

  15. I think that Ralph would have a better chance of helping the boys survive on the island. Jack is good for hunting and everything, but he would only help the boys he found useful survive. All of the little ones, the boys who couldn't help would be forgotten an left behind if Jack were the leader.
Ralph is better equipped to help these boys. He wouldn't leave anyone behind and he would keep track of everyone. The boys would be saved sooner because of the signal fire and they would stay organized with assemblies in which they voice their own opinions and are heard.
If anything Jack is holding them back from being rescued and is possibly even endangering the lives of these boys because of his careless and violent ways. It would be best if Ralph and Jack could work together but that will never happen.

  16. The character that is better able to help the boys survive on the island I think is Piggy only because I see a wiser side of him out of all the boys. He seems to know way more too. The other boys very young, vary ages from 6 years to 13 years don't have much maturity, let alone any experience that can help them survive alone except for their instincts. Piggy seems to have a lot of knowledge that might helps the boys in a lot of situations. After all, it was Piggy's idea to get all the boys together to see who was alive after the plane crash. The only thing Ralph wanted to do was play around, and swim. It was also Piggy who taught Ralph how to blow on the conch to call everyone in. Piggy seems to be accomplishing way more than any other boys have. Some are trying aimlessly to kill a pig, others surviving on their own adventures, and some burdened by the thought that they have to survive alone. None in the condition to actually except the fact that they might never be saved, or even die. Piggy rejected by their own world of society is a bit of shame only because of his physical appearance. He should be recognized by his chain of thoughts to let them be inspired but the foolish and judgmental side of these boys seem to let them fall in their own doom hinting a bit of comparison to the war.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Of all the boys, I think Ralph is more able to help all the boys survive on the island. Although Piggy has the smarts, he doesn't have the potential as a leader. Ralph on the other hand knows what's what and what they need to do survive. Ralph tries to keep everything orderly and fair for everyone, while all Jack and the hunters want to do is hunt and do anything they please. The way people survive things are to have order and know what to do. Systems and governments do not last very long at all if they are not orderly and together. Ralph knows how to govern the group of boys and help them survive this ordeal.

  18. I think that Ralph is the best fit character to help the boys survive on the island. Ralph is fairly intelligent and physically fit, and also is deeply worried about the boys’ rescue. While many of the others like Jack also care about the boys, almost all of them do not see the full importance of rescue, and are just as concerned with hunting, which will not help them to survive happily in the long run.
Only one other character is intelligent, well intentioned, and sees the importance of rescue like Ralph does. This is Piggy. Unfortunately, Piggy is not much of a leader, and can only see out of one eye. Also, most of the boys do not like Piggy, and some even refuse to listen to him because he is overweight. A few of the boys, like Jack, do not listen to or like Piggy because they are afraid of his intelligence. These fundamental flaws in Piggy’s leadership skills and likeability show that Ralph is the best suited character to help the boys survive on the island.

  19. Chapter 6
I think that Ralph is better suited to help the boys survive. He knows what will help them. He realizes that they need rules and order, whereas Jack just wants to kill pigs and eat almost raw meat all day long. Ralph is actually fighting to get them home. He listens to the “littluns” scream in the night and knows that if they don’t get home to their mothers soon that they will slowly pine away with sorrow. His first orders included building a signal fire and building shelters. He wanted to assign everyone a task, and that way things would have gotten done. Jack’s only goal was the pig. I think the only reason he really wanted to kill the pig was because he had failed to kill it the first time and it escalated into this longing for meat. I am not even sure Jack is completely sane at this point. Ralph, however, seems to have a grip on the reality and danger of their situation. Therefore I think that Ralph is a much better candidate for chief.

    ReplyDelete
  20. In my opinion, I believe that Ralph would be better off helping the boys survive on the island. I also believe Ralph is more capable of completing the task. Ralph thinks ahead for the future and does not get distracted by the misbehavior of the boys. He knows that the boys on the island need to stop acting foolish so that they can be saved. He also assigns them tasks to complete throughout the day to be sure everything is done properly to keep them alive. Ralph also makes sure and knows that there is supposed to be a fire going at all times in case of a passing ship. Jack on the other hand would not be the person to help keep the boys alive on the island. Jack is too drawn up in hunting and meat. He does not realize that they need to be saved. In conclusion, I believe Ralph would be the better person to help the boys survive on the island.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think that Ralph is the best one on the island to lead everybody to survival. He is always looking out for everybody and thinking about how they can get off the island. While Jack just wants to be the boss and kill pigs and find the "beasty."
Piggy on the other hand is smart and would make good ideas but then some of the guys would just make fun of him all the time. If Piggy was to get respect from the group which is very unlikely just because he is fat he would be good to help survive. So Ralph is the best one to help the group survive.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think Ralph would be the best candidate to help the boys survive on the island. He seems to be the calmest and collective compared to the other boys. Ralph and a select few are the only boys that actually do the productive work that they were assigned to better the whole group.
Jack finally did get a pig to feed the boys but they did waste a lot of time doing this and they also let the fire go out. That fire could have saved the boys because a boat came by but the people on that boat had no way of knowing that there were stranded children on the island. Jack and the chorus boys failed Ralph, the others, and themselves.
Sam and Eric would probably not be the best people to help the boys survive either because while they were on fire duty, they fell asleep while some air planes flew by and the fire was out. If the fire was still burning they might have been spotted and saved.
The other children (littluns) are just too young or immature to really be able to do something to help them. They clearly proved that they can’t even set up a campsite for themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think that Jack is the one who would help the boys survive on the island the best. Now that’s not to say that Ralph doesn’t show excellent leadership skills. Ralph’s skills are mostly strategies to get off the island, while Jack’s skills are on surviving on the island. It doesn’t state in the book that Jack was the one not going to the bathroom in the designated bathroom area and it’s not entirely his fault that the huts are crude. Jack’s has skill to survive. All you really need is food and water. Jack is able to do that, and it seems the boys on the island (with the exception of Simon and Piggy) favor Jack’s wild and reckless personality.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think that Ralph is able help the boys survive because he is strict about what to do for example he knows how to make everyone work together in a team with out people being all over the place. He made groups which will take turns in keeping the fire up. This shows that he is also responsible. Ralph keeps track of each and every kid he makes sure that they are following the rules and also makes sure that they don't get lost. So Ralph is the best one to be with the group to help them survive.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think that Piggy would be the best to help the boys survive because he has the brains. He may not be very well liked and may be the odd one out but he IS very smart. Recall that in chapter 2, the boys set a swath of trees ablaze and lost one boy because of their disorginization and stupidity and Piggy tells them everything they did wrong and what they should have done first to be successful.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think that its hard to choose between Ralph, and Piggy. They would make a great team to help the boys survive the island. Ralph is a great leader and guides the boys alot he keeps them together.Piggy is the smartest he can tell everyone whats right and wrong and what to do. Together with the great leadership and brains everyone will be just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Jack. While Ralph may seem more composed and the obvious choice for a leader, he also has some questionable characteristics. For example, when Ralph first meet Piggy, he promised not to tell anyone about his humiliating nickname. Yet, Ralph proceeded to embarrass Piggy in front of all the assembled boys. This shows that Ralph should not be trusted. Also, when building the signal fire, Ralph showed no restraint and joined the other boys in burning all their fire wood. This excessive burning ended up roasting a small child. Ralph, despite his good-natured appearance, is truly just as savage and unruly as the rest of them.
Piggy is probably the most intelligent and logical of all the boys, but is disrespected and laughed at since he is fat.
Jack, is a good leader because he is savvy, and knows what needs to be done. Jacks powerful leadership can tame the unruly young children who need a strong leader. However, Jack’s only drawback is that he can get carried away with his blood thirst.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I believe Ralph is the most capable. He is confident, calm, and not scared to try. For example, when all the boys went on the expedition and they reach the walkway, Ralph is the only one who volunteers to go. Ralph knows what is best for him and everyone else. He knows that the fire needs to be burning all day and the shelters need to built. Ralph reminds the boys what they are doing when they get off track and start playing games. Yes, Jack did join Ralph, but he didn't risk it by going first. People may say Jack is the one who can help the boys survive, but honestly he can't. Jack is no leader, all his priorities are about him. Jack is cocky and thinks about himself first than others. If Jack were the one who had to help the boys survive, he would probably kill everyone else and he'd be the only one alive. Ralph will keep most of the boys alive because he is confident and intelligent.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's hard to choose between Ralph and Jack.

Ralph is more responsible. He is worried about keeping the fire going and having the shelters built. He really wants to get himself and the other boys off the island. He is also like the other boys. He helped burn all of the fire wood, that ended up getting another boy killed.

Jack is a good hunter, so he helps with getting food and feeding the boys. He is a very dominate person and you need that in a leader. Unfortunately he seems to only care about himself and is not very interested in getting off the island.

If Jack and Ralph could work together and get along they would both be able to help everybody else on the island survive.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I believe that Simon will be the most useful in helping the boys survive. He may not seem like leadership material but some times help doesn't come from the leader but from their supporters. Ralph and Jack are trying to build huts and kill pigs, that is important so Simon helps them complete these tasks but he also listens and help take care of some of the younger boys. Helping some of the younger boys it very important because if they're freaking out over nightmares or if they get sick, it'll cause chaos in the group, so we need someone to help them with their problems and keep them in check so they can worry about more important problems like fresh water and food.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think that Simon will be the most helpful in the survival of all the boys. He supports Ralph and helps him through the rough spots, he supports of all the younger boys. He reassures them that everything will be O.K. While the older boys are worried about shelter and food.

    ReplyDelete
  32. In my opinion simone is going to be the most helpful for a few reasons. he is very intelligent and mature for his age and willing to help. like the book said only simone helped ralph build the huts. he is also resourceful, he found his own escape for when he needs to wind down, that shows that he knows about survival because he found a great shelter. he also gives great support and hope to ralph when he doubts rescue. if simone wasnt in the book i think that other than piggy there wouldnt be any innocence either.

    ReplyDelete
  33. In my opinion, Jack is better able to help the boys survive on the island. While Ralph is probably better to help them get rescued, like keeping the fire going, Jack knows that the boys need meat and he knows what needs to get done, when it needs to get done. Ralph seems very unconfident as a leader, but Jack isn't afraid to voice his opinion whenever he sees necessary. Finally, he doesn't tolerate laziness from the littluns. If he can whip them into shape and get them to start working, surviving will be a breeze.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think that Ralph would be more helpful to the boys. This is because he seems to be a great leader, and extremely fair. Even though Piggy is smart he wouldn't be confident enough to help them. Also Jack seems to be too bossy and selfish to be a good survival expert. Ralph is great at getting the boys to do things that help them survive, and is very organized with how it should be done. I believe if Ralph is the main boy to be their leader of survival these boys will actually be able to stay alive on the island.
